The August 2024 edition of the Indonesian Update features a main report on the development of reproductive technology that has been utilized by the Indonesian people, the related policy context, and the value challenges in utilizing this reproductive technology. The government and all parties have an important role in efforts to increase awareness of human reproductive rights and individual freedom in determining their life choices, including in the use of reproductive technology.
In the economic field, the Indonesian Update discusses the prediction of the Indonesian economy if Donald Trump is re-elected in the US presidential election held on November 5, 2024. Trump’s protectionist policies will potentially affect the Indonesian economy by reducing the trade balance and capital outflows. Furthermore, we also discuss increasing economic complexity as an effort to escape the middle-income trap.
In the legal field, the Indonesian Update discusses the affirmative action in the recognition of customary territories. Affirmative action can be carried out to increase the opportunities for indigenous groups to utilize their territories by obtaining permits with procedures that are easier to accommodate indigenous communities. Furthermore, we also discuss the discourse on wiretapping authority that will later be held by the Indonesian National Police (Polri) in the Draft Law on the Indonesian National Police. The threat to the privacy of civilians is one thing that is underlined in this issue. Criticism of wiretapping practices has been around for a long time and is generally around the issue of criminal law enforcement, intelligence needs, and eradication of corruption.
In the political field, the Indonesian Update discusses the narrative of the Government’s National Capital policy. Policy narratives play an important role in shaping public understanding of policies proposed or implemented by the Government. In the context of IKN development, the Government uses communication strategies to shape public opinion and address emerging criticism. Next, we discuss the 2024 Regional Head Elections (Pilkada) in Papua which face major challenges. With the formation of a new autonomous region, the Papuan people are faced with issues of accessibility, security, and election integrity. It is important to prepare for the 2024 Simultaneous Pilkada carefully from the start to anticipate these problems.
Still in the political field, the Indonesian Update also discusses looking at the problem of regional head candidate recruitment ahead of the 2024 Pilkada. Political parties must improve their political recruitment system. Political recruitment must prioritize a meritocratic system, gender equality, inclusion, and representation, rather than just fulfilling kinship or group or class interests, as well as favoritism considerations that have often been applied for short-term and pragmatic interests alone.
The monthly publication of the Indonesian Update with current themes is expected to help policy makers in the Government and business institutions – as well as academics, think tanks, and civil society elements, both domestic and foreign, to obtain current information and contextual analysis of economic, political, social, and legal conditions in Indonesia, as well as an understanding of public policy in Indonesia.
Happy reading.
