The Indonesian Update — Volume XVIII , No.11 – November, December 2024 (English Version)

The November-December 2024 edition of the Indonesian Update features a main report on President Prabowo’s administration, which has serious concerns about energy transition and climate policy. This was stated in the G20 Summit and COP29. At least, there are three risks that President Prabowo’s administration must mitigate in 2025 and beyond; namely, technological risk, social risk, and institutional framework risk.

In the legal field, Update Indonesia raises the topic of improving welfare and eradicating Corruption, Collusion, Nepotism (KKN) in the judicial environment must be carried out comprehensively and continuously to increase the independence of the judiciary. Furthermore, we also discuss the need for indigenous peoples to receive special affirmative treatment to be able to register their land and prevent more massive agrarian conflicts in the future.

In the political field, Update Indonesia discusses the current role of the military. In the Post-New Order regime, the efforts to strengthen civilian supremacy has included eliminating the TNI’s “dual function” and purifying the military’s role as the guardian of national defense. However, the legacy of authoritarian structures and loopholes in regulations still opens up space for military involvement in the civilian sphere, which has the potential to hinder democratic consolidation and give rise to the risk of new authoritarianism. Next, we discuss the ethical limits of the use of personal funds by public officials, as well as its impact on transparency and government integrity.

Still in the political field, Update Indonesia also discusses the plans to revise the Election Law. The Government and the DPR need to discuss issues that are not only the interests of political parties in the revision of the Election Law. For example, the issue of improving the political party recruitment process, the use of social media in campaigns, the affirmation of youth, women, and people with disabilities in elections, campaign costs, reports of campaign violations, participatory supervision, and others. The process of revising the Election Law must also be encouraged to be implemented in a participatory, inclusive, transparent, contextual, and accountable manner.

In the social field, the Indonesian Update discusses the Anti-Discrimination Bill against Vulnerable Groups as a solution to protect the rights of groups that often face stigma, marginalization, and injustice. This bill aims to strengthen legal protection, and strengthen the paradigm shift in policy-making towards equal rights and respect for diversity. Furthermore, we also discuss the challenges of the sustainability of the KemenPPPA program in the Prabowo-Gibran Government era.

The monthly publication of Update Indonesia with current themes is expected to help policy makers in government and business institutions – as well as academics, think tanks, and civil society elements, both domestic and foreign, to obtain current information and contextual analysis of economic, political, social, and legal conditions in Indonesia, as well as an understanding of public policy in Indonesia.

Happy reading.
