In the 2012 State budget, the TNI, through the Ministry of Defense (Kemhan), get as big as US$ 6.5 billion for the purchase of main weapon systems (alutsista), and US $ 280 million of which will be uses to purchase Main Batlle Tanks (MBTs). With this budget, the Army (TNI AD) originally planned to buy as many as 44 new Leopard 2A6 MBTs from germany. However, in the subsequent developments, the TNI AD got an offer from the Netherlands government to buy their 50 2A4 Leopard tanks and 50 2A6 tanks.

The TNI’s desire to have the MBTs has recived an opposition from the members of the House of Representatives’ Commission I. There are a number of reasons for such rejection, ranging from the geographical reason to the utilization of the domestic products of alutsista. This edition of the Indonesian Update raises a main topic about the polemics over the planned purchase of main battle of tanks (MBTs).

This edition of the Indonesian Update also raises several important themes in legal affairs, politics, and social affairs. On legal affairs, it talks about the long and winding road to ensure press freedom in Indonesia and the urgency of the Law on the Protection of Fishermen. On politics, it discusses the relevance of defending the country. On social affairs, it talks about the rights of pedestrians.
